School fee, concession and instalment calculator

Net annual fee = annual fee − discounts, and each instalment = net fee ÷ number of instalments. ₹60,000 with a 10% concession and 5% sibling discount is ₹51,000 a year, or ₹12,750 a quarter.

Result

Total discount15.0%
Discount amount₹9,000
Net annual fee₹51,000
Per instalment (4)₹12,750
Late fee on one instalment₹200
Instalment including late fee₹12,950

Concession and sibling discount are added together here. If your policy applies them one after another, calculate the second on the reduced fee.

Key takeaways

  • Define each concession once, with a reason and an approver, so it applies the same way to every student.
  • Decide whether the sibling discount is added to the concession or applied after it, and write the rule down.
  • Show parents the net fee and the instalment dates in the fee structure, so there are no surprises at the counter.
  • Keep late fees in a policy and apply them from the system, not by the clerk.

School Fee Instalment & Concession formula

Total discount %
concession % + sibling discount % (as set here)
Net annual fee
annual fee − (annual fee × total discount %)
Per instalment
net annual fee ÷ number of instalments
Late fee
late fee per day × days late

Worked example: a ₹60,000 annual fee

A school charges ₹60,000 a year, collected in 4 instalments. A student gets a 10% concession and a 5% sibling discount. The late fee is ₹20 a day.

  1. Total discount = 10% + 5% = 15%, which is ₹9,000
  2. Net annual fee = ₹60,000 − ₹9,000 = ₹51,000
  3. Per instalment = ₹51,000 ÷ 4 = ₹12,750
  4. If one instalment is paid 10 days late, late fee = 10 × ₹20 = ₹200, so the parent pays ₹12,950

If the sibling discount were instead applied after the concession, the net fee would be ₹51,300, a difference of ₹300. Whichever rule you choose, apply it the same way for every student.

Setting up fees without disputes

  • Send defaulter reminders from a report, not from memory.

Frequently asked questions

How is a school fee concession calculated?

A concession is a percentage or fixed amount taken off the fee. Calculate the discount, subtract it from the annual fee, and divide the net fee into the agreed instalments.

Is the sibling discount added to the concession?

That depends on the school’s policy. This calculator adds them. If your policy applies them one after the other, calculate the second discount on the already reduced fee.

Can a school charge a late fee?

Schools usually do, as set out in their fee policy. Keep the rule written, apply it consistently and check local regulations for any cap.
