E-way bill

Also called: EWB

How it works

The general threshold is a consignment value above ₹50,000, and validity is counted in days based on distance: for regular cargo, one day for every 200 km or part of it. Rules for intra-state movement and exemptions vary, so check the current rule.

An e-invoice registers the invoice with the Invoice Registration Portal. An e-way bill authorises the movement of the goods. The two are separate documents, and good billing software generates both from the same invoice.

Example

A 650 km movement of regular cargo is valid for 4 days (650 ÷ 200, rounded up).

Frequently asked questions

Is an e-way bill the same as an e-invoice?

No. An e-invoice registers the invoice and returns an IRN and QR code. An e-way bill authorises the movement of goods and carries the vehicle number.
