Variation order

Also called: change order, VO

How it works

Variations add, omit or change work. Each approved variation is recorded against the BOQ so the revised contract value, and the margin on it, can be recalculated.

Unapproved variations are a risk: work done without a recorded and approved instruction is hard to claim in an RA bill.

Frequently asked questions

Does a variation order change the contract value?

Yes. Approved variations are added to or deducted from the original contract value, so margin should be recalculated on the revised value.
