Bed occupancy rate (BOR) and ALOS

Also called: BOR, ALOS, average length of stay

How it works

Together they show how full the beds were and how long patients stayed. Bed turnover rate is discharges divided by beds, and turnover interval is the empty bed-days divided by discharges.

Count only operational beds, use the same period for every figure and include deaths and transfers as discharges.

Example

A 50-bed hospital with 1,080 inpatient days and 270 discharges in 30 days has a BOR of 72% and an ALOS of 4.0 days.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good bed occupancy rate?

It depends on the hospital, but many planners treat the 70–85% range as healthy because very high occupancy leaves no room for emergencies.
